Arts Education 2012

Bayimba Arts Education department is organizing a range of arts workshops/ training aimed at introducing artists to new arts disciplines, developing their artistic skills and promoting inter- and Intra disciplinary artistic collaborations. In 2012, the arts educational programs include the following:

Curator Workshop

8 selected Artists, Gallery owners, arts historians will attend 2 week curator workshop at the Uganda Museum. The workshop seeks to increase the understanding of the role and need for curatorial practice and to develop curatorial skills of selected participants. The workshop will be led by Patrick Verstraete who has 12 years of experience as a contemporary arts curator. The workshop will combine theoretical knowledge with practical application of knowledge acquired. Each participant will prepare an exhibition by the end of the workshop

Photography summer school

The Bayimba Photography Summer School will be held from 16th July till 13th August, 2012 in Kampala and will be able to accept up to 50 participants.

The programme will be composed of technical instructions in basic principles of photography and photo editing during the first week. During the second and third week, participants will receive further instructions in one of the following five areas of their choice: 1) photojournalism, 2) documentary photography, 3) fashion photography, 4) event photography or 5) nature photography. During the second and third weeks, they will do their field work. During the last week of the Summer School, participants will learn how to prepare and curate their work for exhibitions. Apart from instructions and practical sessions, the programme also aims at stimulating group dynamics, networking and mutual learning amongst participants and includes group discussions (about photography, photographers as well as participants’ work).

The Summer School will be led by qualified and professional Ugandan and international tutors. They include Andrea Stultiens (Director of the Bayimba Photography Summer School), Tadej Znidarzic, Will Boase, and Edward Echwalu, Cyrus Kawalya.

Music Training

The short intensive course is designed to appeal to both the beginner and the practicing Musician who feels the need to develop their skills or understanding of the fundamentals of the musical form and structure from African perspective particularly through a Uganda lens. The course addresses various skills set within music like rhythmic reading and writing, body percussion, introduction to harmony, improvisation, analysis and live performance. The 3 week Course is scheduled for 5th – 23rd November 2012. The training will be executed by Kaz Kasozi the Music Director of the Bayimba Cultural Foundation and Maloe a tutor at the KMS, events manager for live classics and a practicing Musician.

Creative Writers Workshop

With the aim of exposing and promoting literature writing in form of performance to the public, Bayimba Cultural Foundation is organizing workshop in creative writing in 2012, with Deborah Assimwe as facilitator. The workshop will take place at the National Theatre, from 6th till 17th August, 2012. Deborah Assimwe will work with 12 participants who will be required to submit their written pieces which they intend to perform. The training will include mentoring of independent artistic voice, looking at aspects of what makes a piece performable/that will include use of language and images and writing exercises. The participants will perform their pieces at the Bayimba International festival of the Arts in September.
